Book No. 43 of 2020
The last half-dozen books I’ve read have been bleak/stressful and if you haven’t noticed we live in pretty stressful times, so I needed something frothy, low-stakes, and fun. I’ve read and enjoyed Guillory’s previous books, so I figured I’d give this one a spin.
As with all of Guillory’s books, the romance is realistic and healthy, with characters who have realistic jobs they are passionate about, and multifaceted women who love food. I particularly enjoyed revisiting London in this book—it was the last international trip I did this year before the world shut down, is a city that i normally visit multiple times a year, and I miss it so very much. (I actually was very meh about the royals-focused first part of the book, btw, which I think is one of those things that reflects how into the royal family you are.)

For other London-based lighthearted romances with realistically crafted women, I generally enjoy Sophie Kinsella’s books (the last one I read being My Not So Perfect Life, which ironically I read on the plane to London).
Guillory’s stories also remind me of Helen Hoang’s books, The Kiss Quotient and The Bride Test, which are also fun, realistic Bay-Area-based romances with POC leads.
