Madeleine Thien // Do Not Say We Have Nothing

Book No. 46 of 2020

This book is a layered, multigenerational saga full of hope and heartbreak and abandoned dreams—it’s very beautifully done. I loved the way classical music is woven into the story (multiple characters are conservatory students/professors) and the existence within the novel of a mysterious story without beginning, end, or author made for a very meta reading experience.

Thematically, this was very similar to Little Gods by Meng Jin.

The multigenerational aspect of the plot reminded me of The Old Drift, by Namwali Serpell.
